Does Failure Guarantee Success?

By now, you’ve probably heard it said a thousand times:

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. ~Michael Jordan

While I have great respect for Michael Jordan (he is my favorite basketball player of all time), I must point out the error of blindly believing this quote at face value.

Does failure alone guarantee success?

Surely not, many people have failed multiple times and still haven’t eventually found success.

Does failure guarantee that we will become wiser?

I will answer this question with a question: How many times have you failed at something only to find yourself repeating that failure again on a later date?

So we can logically deduce that failure alone does not guarantee or prepare us for success with great wisdom.

So the question boils down to this: What does guarantee wisdom and success out of failure?

Attitude.

It sounds so simple, but it’s so true. It is a core truth. Attitude will keep you learning, growing, and moving forward no matter what the challenges. Attitude is what makes champions. It was Michael Jordan’s attitude that kept him moving forward until he won multiple championships, not the failures

Resolve today that you will be a champion by taking on a champion’s attitude.
